Touchback may accurately be called cornball hokum by some, but it's nevertheless a well-made film filled with heart and soul (and Snake Plissken).

What ultimately waters down a movie like Touchback, aside from a really sappy ending, is that we know the answers going in.

This movie is simply great. They don’t make them like this anymore. As you can see I’m writing this review in 2022, the movies from the 2000-2010s are just better than the the CGI garbage of today. There aren’t many football or baseball ball movies being made anymore. And even if there we’re they wouldn’t even be as good as this. I don’t know maybe it’s the cameras or the people but this movie is just better. The story is good the ending is irritating but this movie is an example of a time when people didn’t care as much about money. People made movies because it was fun and it seemed like it. 2012 was when Disney wasn’t a juggernaut and made bangers all the time. Now in 2022 all Disney can care about is getting more subscriptions on Disney+. I don’t know. If you were to watch this movie in 2012 you would say this is a below average to average movie but, watching this movie in 2022 makes you say I miss 2000-2010 movies they truly don’t make them like they used too and they sadly never will.

Nostalgic. I loved football and basketball movies really all sports movies I’ve probably watch every sports movie made in 2012. Back when blockbuster was running I went there every day after work and got a sports movie to watch and this one was one of my favorite’s don’t really know why. It’s just really special to me that’s all

Entering the minor canon of movies named after sports regulations - move over, "Offside!" - Don Handfield's Touchback takes a handoff from "Peggy Sue Got Married" and "It's A Wonderful Life" and runs it up the middle for a modest gain.

This handsomely produced but ponderously uplifting trifle should be flagged for excessive schmaltz and offensive illogic.

Scott's decision, and how the ending plays down to the detail, is obvious from the first ten minutes. The rest of the movie just goes through the motions like so much labor. Every scene goes the way you think it will, and nothing works. The dialog contains such witticisms as, "Nice job Pearson, you dummy!" from one of Scott's teammates, and, "I'm gonna break your neck, Backwater!" from a member of the rival team--"Backwater" being the clever term used by insiders and outsiders alike for the small town of Coldwater. The actors struggle with stage direction; I always felt conscious of the players hitting their marks and delivering their awkward lines; nothing comes off as natural. It doesn't help that the actors, especially Presley, are too old to play high school kids. Full review on my blog.
