A rapturously beautiful, lyrically dazzling work.

A multi-layered, experimental film, a film about storytelling, but the beauty of it is that it transcends the story at its center while still celebrating the virtues of a tale well-told.

Chunhyang is a movie — and a heroine — for all times.

From the ravishing landscape photography to the exquisite costume design, the entire film is a stunning visual experience; rarely since Hollywood's golden age has the genre been so well served.

New York Magazine (Vulture)
The Korean director im Kwon-Taek has made more than 90 films since his first in 1962, and perhaps this explains why his latest, Chunhyang, seems so effortless and masterly. Based on a highly popular eighteenth-century Korean folktale, it's a movie that, stylistically, mixes the traditional with the avant-garde; the narrative may be ritualistic, but there's a let's-try-it-on-for-size friskiness to the filmmaking.

Village Voice
Im's movie approaches a seething, primitivist beauty that evokes Makhmalbaf and parallels the contrapuntal textual investigations of Resnais.

A feast for the eyes. But not, alas, for the ears.

A visually lavish period piece that sacrifices dramatic energy and emotional depth for formal theatrical structure.2007 (2.0)Directed by Im Kwon-taek, "Chunhyang" (2000) is a bold South Korean historical drama that adapts one of the nation's most celebrated traditional folktales through the art of Pansori, a traditional Korean musical storytelling medium. Set in 18th-century Korea, the narrative follows the secret romance between Mong-ryong, the privileged son of a local governor, and Chun-hyang, the beautiful daughter of a retired courtesan. Despite strict social class barriers, the two fall deeply in love and secretly marry. However, when Mong-ryong is forced to accompany his father to the capital city of Hanyang to pursue his official career, Chun-hyang is left behind. Troubles escalate when a corrupt and tyrannical new governor, Hak-do, arrives and demands that Chun-hyang serve him. Refusing to violate her marital loyalty, she suffers cruel imprisonment and torture while waiting for her beloved's return. Starring Lee Hyo-jeong as Chun-hyang and Cho Seung-woo in his debut performance as Mong-ryong, the film frames its cinematic imagery around live Pansori vocal performances. While Im Kwon-taek's direction offers breathtaking cinematography, exquisite period aesthetics, and high cultural value, the theatrical staging and repetitive musical narration flatten the character development and pacing. The tragic romance ultimately feels distant and rigid rather than emotionally stirring. Viewing this in 2013 was a visually stunning yet tedious cinematic experience that fell short of its dramatic potential, earning a low score.
