This Taiwanese indie title is so much more than just another horror game. It takes on ambitious themes in a rich point and click adventure. The creepy artwork and soundtrack will feel divine and beautiful once you reach the end of the game.

Detention is an astonishingly well-put together game that understands how brooding horror is more effective than mere jump-scares.

A game unlike any horror film you've seen before.

I liked: The story, the puzzles, the art and the atmosphere. I disliked: No controller support and unclear saving points before you reach the first one. If you're like me and loved The Cat Lady, you'll probably like this as well, it's the same kind of somber, heartfelt horror adventure.

Nota 7

Detention isn't for everyone. It's not an easy snack to gobble up. It will haunt you for some time and creep into your dreams. I recommend the game for those who enjoy deep and troubled stories and want to experience them in some other manner than just keep walking and pressing X when prompted. I can't stress enough how mature the story and its dramaturgy is, considering these guys have never done any published games or storytelling before. Detention meets all the unwritten laws of Asian tragedies and I could easily picture it as a movie by the likes of Ang Lee, the world renowned Taiwanese director. That's the highest compliment I can imagine giving to this game.

Detention came out in 2017 and a movie was made in 2019. I bought the game but ended up watching the movie first and really enjoyed it. It was an amazing story of both a historical time period in Taiwan and a fascinating character dive. I decided to next play the game and I’m glad I did. First I’m amazingly impressed that a movie was able to be made from a point and click game. This is very well-made. It is fun to try and solve the puzzles that will allow you to progress. And the creators were wonderful in that if it was a super-long walk between where you started and where you ended up for the puzzle and no longer needed that section of the map, they cut out the middle walking section so going between the doors just takes you where you need to go. The story is well-done and the last chapter has you go through the reveals of what happened and answer several questions which determine if you get the true ending or the normal ending. If you’ve been paying attention to the story you should be able to get the true ending as I did. Once you complete the game, a chapter select option opens up on the main menu so you can go back in to the last chapter to get the other ending. Playing through with just one ending took me just over four hours to complete and I feel completely satisfied with this game. It didn’t overstay its welcome. I would absolutely recommend this to anyone who enjoys story-focused games.

Detention preserves the historical memory of Taiwan, showing the bloody roots of a country oppressed by the martial law for over 38 years. It is a unique and precious survival horror that knows how to tell an important, crucial and painful story that belongs to us all.

An intelligent, thought-provoking, and extremely creepy adventure, that proves that survival horror can be more than just shooting zombies.

Detention has something important to say, but using a game as a medium seems inappropriate in this instance. While the subject matter is definitely worth discussing and I'd personally love to see more of this in games moving forward, the way in which it's been executed here left me groaning by the end of the three hours. Predictable in terms of story and unimaginative in terms of game design, Detention doesn't work as a game.

From the get go it fiills you when an inexplicable sense of dread and unease, as you play you realize the darkness that lurks near you in this school goes beyond the paranormal. Striking stellar story. MUST PLAY purchased on mobile for 4.99 dollars

Impressive artwork, music and nice narrative. It is more like an interactive movie instead of game though.

+ Interesting setup (60' Taiwan) + Climatic graphics - Too short, max 3h of gameplay. - Only 3 real puzzles (and rather easy btw) - Whole 4 chapter is just -> click, and go forward - First part is horror, second is just psychological mumbo-jumbo without any feel of danger
SummaryDetention is a survival horror game set in 1960s Taiwan under martial law. Incorporated religious elements based in Taiwanese/Chinese culture and mythology, the game provided players with unique graphics and gaming experience.
