One Finger Death Punch10
Mar 7, 2014
This game uses very simple mechanics but executes them extremely well. The result is a fun, unique, and addictive game. Combined with the fact that One Finger Death Punch is dirt cheap, this game is a must-have.

Zombie Tycoon 2: Brainhov's Revenge8
May 13, 2013
Zombie Tycoon 2 is a simple RTS/MOBA hybrid. It is simple in that you only control 4 different units at a time. Also, your hero unit (called a monster in this game) levels up without the player deciding how to allocate stats and skills. This simplicity does not take away from the game. Instead, it enhances it and allows new players to the genre a nice entry point. In Zombie Tycoon 2, you don't build a base. Instead you capture buildings which then allow you to change the type of squads you control. There are various different kinds of squads which you can use, all which have different pros and cons. The game's story is so-so. However, the cut scenes in which the story is told are well done and quite humorous. On a related note, the game's ending is epic and one of the best ones I've seen in a while. Zombie Tycoon 2's multiplayer is a blast. In the multiplayer, you play head-to-head with another human opponent and try to destroy that opponent's mobile spawner (essentially their base). The multiplayer is held back, however, because of there only being one map. Also, I believe the power of the monsters is unbalanced. The badger monster seems to be too weak while the Braintrust monster seems overpowered, especially because it self destructs upon death killing all enemy units within a certain radius. In addition to these flaws in multiplayer, unit control can be a problem in single player. During the campaign, I lost total control of my units and I needed to restart the level. All in all, Zombie Tycoon 2 is worth checking out especially at its low price point.

Super House of Dead Ninjas10

SHoDN is a retro 16-bit game with shades of Metroid and Castlevania. It is also amazingly fun. There is a free flash version of this game which I recommend trying before purchasing this game. What the paid version adds is more weapons, a new tower, fullscreeen support, gamepad support, and other new additions. Best of all, this game is super cheap only costing around 6 dollars. The game also supports user-generated levels and the couple I have played have been quite good.

Dynasty Warriors Next8
Mar 21, 2013
This is my first Dynasty Warriors game so I cannot comment on whether DWN is simply more of the same. What I can say is that the gameplay is a ton of fun. Going into a battle playing as one character and wiping out an army of 1000 by yourself is very satisfying. It gives you a sense of power not seen in many other games. Outside of battles, you are constantly conquering nearby kingdoms which also gives a sense of greatness. I find the touch and motion controls of the Vita are done well. They are mostly used in mini-games that breakup the hack and slash action of the main battles. I would say because of these new features in Dynasty Warriors Next, even veteran players will find it somewhat original. There are a couple of things about this game which I don't like. The first is the uniformity of your officers comments during the battles. It would have helped if the developers had added more variety to what they say. Second, the story can get a bit confusing because there are so many characters. Also, key plot points often occur during a battle which the player can easily miss because they are focused on fighting the enemy. Perhaps the game's narrator could have repeated these key plot developments after the battle was finished. All in all, these are minor complaints which don't take that much away from a superb game.

Ridiculous Fishing - A Tale of Redemption10
Mar 21, 2013
Ridiculous Fishing is an excellent game. The fishing portion of the game consists of 3 stages. You first cast your fishing line and try to lower it into the water as far as possible. While you are doing this, you are using the tilt functions of your device to avoid fish. Once you hit a fish, you bring your line to the surface all the while using the tilt functions to touch as many fish as you can. Once you reach the surface, the fish fly into the air and you use a gun to shoot the fish. While the game play sounds silly, in reality it is extremely fun and original. As you catch/shoot fish, you gain money which you can use to buy upgrades which help you go deeper and find more fish. Meanwhile, the fish you encounter have different properties such as aggression and speed which will alter your strategy and keep the game fresh. The game is currently priced at $2.99 which is more than fair considering the game has no in-app-purchases. I highly recommend you try this game.

Ecolibrium6
Mar 14, 2013
In Ecolibrium, you create your own ecosystem with herbivores, carnivores, and plants. The organisms are fictional, yet often have real world counterparts. The game's graphics are beautiful. The environment and the animal models are gorgeous and show off the Vita's capabilities. The game is free-to-play and with micro transactions ranging from $.0.25 to $1.50, Ecolibrium's business model is extremely fair. The game falls short, however, in terms of game play. Like many free-to-play games, there is an energy bar which limits how many actions you can take at one time. This in itself is not a bad thing. What is bad is that often times you pick up the game and while your energy bar is full, there is nothing for you to do. This is because at a certain point, the game restricts you from adding additional animals or plants to your ecosystem. So you are literally stuck until you can save enough money to sell one of your current organisms so that you can replace it with a newer organism. What this translates into is a game that you will quickly abandon because of boredom.

Treasures of Montezuma Blitz9
Feb 24, 2013
I enjoy this game. As far as freemium games go, the business model of this game is fair. The heart system (commonly known as energy in other freemiums) replenishes quickly. Also, you don't have to pay for crystals you get them easily enough. Treasures of Montezuma Blitz makes great use of the Vita's rear touch pad, which is something you don't see very often in Vita games. It also adds new game play elements to the original ToM which makes the game fun for people who have ToM experience in the past. The game uses a level up system which gives you unlocks and rewards This gives the game an addictive quality which is excellent. The only things that I don't like about the game is that it can be hard to know when you are in kicker mode and some of the trophies are ridiculous. For example, you are rewarded a silver trophy for playing the game 100 hours. Overall, I would say give this game a shot.
