Metroid Prime Remastered10
Feb 11, 2023
I can't believe this is real! My favorite game of all time gets an amazing remaster that borders on remake. This is easily the best looking game on switch - truly beautiful and even more impressive at 60fps. Its nostalgic and new at the same time, major kudos for including every control scheme (each of which has its own pros and cons). Finally playing this game in full dual analog stick mode is a dream though. This gives me hope for metroid prime 4, even if still ends up on the ancient switch.

This game is just stupidly difficult, played it for almost two days and couldn't get past the first level. Super hard boss at the end if you even make it there, and then you die and get to replay an hour again to get back there. The pickup and powerful system is absurdly complicated and vague while also having basically no impact on the gameplay. Game looks all right but basically ps4 level. Your average gamer or working person will never have fun with this glorified/impossible arena shooter.

This game is an absolute disaster and evil masquerading as art. A completely stupid and nonsensical story told through absurd and unjustified levels of brutality and violence. This game is rotten and will leaving you feeling the same - it's like everyone at Naughty Dog has some sick infatuation with watching and making people suffer (including the player) - how is this the same company that used to make fun games like Jak and Uncharted?? Find yourselves again Naughty Dog, this game is evil.

Arise: A Simple Story10

This game is what it appears to be - a simple but beautiful story both thematically and visually. I really appreciated that the game tells a coherent story. Many artistic indi games often stray too far into abstract, excessive symbolism without any real closure or a complete story. This game intentionally avoids that. I also appreciated the variety of level appearances and moods - although it is sort of a sad game overall there are plenty of moments of wonder and joy. My one complaint is that the wall climbing is aggravatingly awkward in terms of button controls and responsiveness for such a simple mechanic. Some of the jump landing detection can also be a little spotty. However, the game provides generous checkpoints and unlimited lives, so you never pay too dearly for a missed jump, and the creativity of the levels makes up for the bland platforming. I highly recommend playing it in one sitting.

Yoshi's Crafted World9

A fun, colorful Yoshi adventure that provides nostalgia for games like Yoshi's island, even if it doesn't achieve their greatness. Overall the game is relaxing and creative, but I would've liked a little more challenge. My only real complaint is the music - most of it is forgettable and remixes the same few tunes over and over. Fun for on the go or couch play.

I bought this because it looked interesting and in the same artistic style of games like journey or Abzu. Unfortunately it is not nearly as compelling. I found the overall world and mechanics to be really confusing and tedious. The story is too vague to mean anything despite some cool moments, and the open world all looks bland and the same. Despite being a small fox creature the character controls are very loose with poor jumping/climbing mechanics. It's really frustrating that the fox can't climb any walls or pull himself up onto ledges...because the world is made almost entirely out of rocky ledges. You have to always find a tree to climb up and glide places, which is very tedious. I also don't like that progression is mostly tied to collecting miscellaneous stones - again, tedious. The progression relationship between learning new songs and collecting all of the various items is also vague and takes a while to figure out, making it unclear where you can go and where you can't. The art style itself is fairly unique but looks inconsistent in some areas due to foggy/faded backgrounds and strange lighting. I also couldn't figure out a way to fast travel around the world, which is frustrating because the geography is surprisingly large and tedious to get around. This caused me to not finish the game - I stopped about three hours into the supposed five hour length. The cat and mouse gameplay with some of the enemies is also annoying from unpredictable AI. Overall Fe feels like it's imitating better games, or trying too hard to be artistic just for the sake of being artistic - without a clear overall vision. It's visuals are not amazing enough to make up for the annoying controls and meandering game play. There are some fun moments and a few cool ideas but overall bland and tedious. Also, as a side note the Switch version had poor and consistent frame rate problems for me, especially in handheld mode, which is why I'm giving it a 4 instead of a 5. Usually I don't care that much about frame rate, but this one was noticeably bad.

I don't understand why this game received such mixed reviews and feedback. I thought it was an incredible game, one that makes more sense the more you think about it after you've played all the way to the end. I love the symbolism and meaning throughout. The music and visuals are amazing. Gameplay can be a little bit clunky at times but the puzzles and design are usually pretty fun. It can be confusing at times knowing where to go since its difficult to maintain an overall sense of direction, but these are minor gripes. The ending made it all worth it. It's definitely similar to Ico/Journey/Abzu titles, but I don't think its a "knockoff" like some people say. The gameplay actually has a lot more depth to it than some of those games. If you liked those I'm guessing you'll love this one too.
