Just like Man in The High Castle, Phillip K **** comes up with a decent Sci-fi premise but gets way too bogged down in the details and character development so the plot is glacially slow paced. This iteration of it is like a 2 universe cold war and is much more focused on the spying than the sci fi. Having already seen Fringe, which is a much better implementation of this idea, its even harder to tolerate the slow pace. JK Simmons is very good though and I suspect that like MiTHC it will also have rare but huge plot developments that may make it worthwhile dragging yourself though it.

The show does indeed **** - the action is boring, the conspiracy plot is boring, it cuts between scenes too often. It's basically just a bunch of young people having sex and doing military stuff, so theres that if you want it. However if you want to be optimistic, as with many military shows, it is also a victim of 'Salty soldier syndrome' as I call it - getting review bombed by the military complaining about inaccurate uniforms and procedures so only like half the bad ratings are actually genuine.

This show is like APB with the app and the drones and all the other tech, except its just the app. Despite that its actually better somehow. Unexpectedly, It actually addresses some of the obvious problems with its dumb premise like 'wouldn't the internet just all gang up on the first person that looks even slightly like a suspect?', but it does also have some NCIS style tech talk that sounds like it's probably complete nonsense if you actually understand it. It seems decent so far, but then I did like APB from just the pilot and that turned awful from the 2nd episode.

Young Sheldon: Season 1
7
User ScoreSwarleyStinson
Sep 28, 2017
The pilot is funnier than expected, but the humor is undermined a bit by what an insufferable ass Sheldon is. For every 1 funny thing he says, he says like 5 things where the cringe level is just too damn high. But then that's kinda how the show works, that contrast is supposed to make it funny. Having adult Sheldon narrate was a mistake, he just interrupts and doesn't really add any value, but at least in this episode there wasn't that much of him. His sassy sister pretty funny. This particular episode was good but there's a lot of ways more episodes could very easily go very bad.

Feb 22, 2017
This show had decent promise in the first episode but it was obvious it was gonna go down the technology vs 'real police work' route. Well turns out it didn't really so far but from ep 2 & 3 its already become a completely generic procedural, just with more technology and no explanation of how a billionaire is directing individual investigations with no experience of police work, and not spending any time running all the businesses that made him a billionaire. Almost Human was a better attempt at the cops with advanced technology idea than APB is.

DC's Legends of Tomorrow: Season 1
6
User ScoreSwarleyStinson
Jun 29, 2016
Legends is still decent but it's a real waste of potential. As crazy as it sounded to have Snart and Heatwave on the team, 'good guy' Snart is actually one of the best characters. They barely use Firestorm and he spends all his time as Stein and Jefferson doing normal human stuff. It's like they purposely write reasons to separate them all the time when the obvious thing to do would be stay together. They barely use Atom, and Ray does normal human stuff most of the time. They barely use Hawkgirl too. Sarah and Snart are really the main characters and they actually work pretty well. Not only is it a team of side character heroes, but its a team of side character heroes not being those heroes. It's more of a standard time travel show, heavily ripping off elements from Dr Who (I'm not sure if time masters were part of DC before or made up for the show, but they are very cheesy and he even steals his **** and gets fired) I think the Vandal Savage premise is what actually threw the show off course and if it was more like the Justice League TV show but just with lesser heroes and more time travel it would be much better. Of course now that they have Supergirl these characters are even more odd choices to save the world but hey they didn't know that at the time.

Lucifer's character is amusing but hes just not enough to make the show anything more than yet another cop show with a gimmick. Blindspot: Season 1

User ScoreSwarleyStinson
Nov 15, 2015
Blindspot started very promising. The crime of the week plots were interesting enough and the overall mystery plot made some surprisingly fast advances. However as the season goes on the tattoo plot has become less and less relevant and the crime of the week format has become quite bland and unoriginal. I don't even care how or why the tattoos happened any more. This could have been a good action show alongside The Blacklist, but now The Blacklist is much better.

Nov 11, 2015
At first I thought all the people complaining about the shows 'feminist agenda' were going a bit too far, but after 3 episodes - yeh, its definitely there. Its not that the message is bad, its just that the feminist dialogue is a bit too shoehorned in and not really things that people would actually say. The shows attempt to appeal equally to women with chick flick style scenes and comic fans with the actual fighting villains seemed to be balanced pretty well at first but the girlyness is starting to push a bit too far. The problem with the actual superhero side of the show is that so far the villains have been pretty lame, and 'bunch of random aliens break out of Kryptonian prison' premise really sets them up to have lots of boring generic villains. A few too many things about the show are just a bit too stupid, pushing suspension of disbelief too far. Then there's the 'lets not cast anyone as superman and just cut his face out of the frame then give him a lame reason to leave all the time' thing. No, just no. Do it it or don't, don't half do it.

User ScoreSwarleyStinson
Nov 5, 2014
At first, Forever was better than I expected. They actually did something interesting with the immortality - he experiences the victims deaths himself to learn more about them. The wake up naked in the river thing is pretty stupid but whatever. He also uses his 250 years of life experience to do the whole Sherlock thing. It also starts an interesting season arc with an immortal enemy. The problem is that after a few episodes it does become the completely generic, yet another cop show I originally expected. You could just pick the good episodes and skip the boring generic ones like Castle but looking at the ratings all signs point to cancellation anyway.

Scorpion is one of those shows that you know is bad, but its actually just good to watch. There's a lot of things that are just dumb and you just think 'nope' and there are a lot of things that sound kinda dumb and you think 'that's probably not right' but you don't know enough about it to be sure, so you can just go with it. There are things that you think about afterwards and think 'yeh that was so dumb, it would never have worked'. But all that said, its still just good fun to watch. The show just doesn't quite cross the line into too many dumb things happening too often.

OK so after the confusing mess of a pilot and reading on Wikipedia what is really going on, it is actually much better. But none of that is explained in the show. Based on the Pilot: The setting and plot make no sense. The movie Legion was set during/soon after the apocalypse, Dominion is set long after the apocalypse in some sort of new society which is never explained. It doesn't tell you who any of the characters are or WTF is going on, it just waffles on at you about angels, prayers, chosen ones... the enemy are the angels but the supposed protagonists call each other archangels with no explanation. Its all just complete bollox.

The pilot was decent, but not great, then after that it gets worse. It's the concept of Chuck except super serious, which doesn't really work with such a ridiculously unrealistic concept. Everyone on IMDB seems to hate the show cos its so 'patriotic and pro CIA' but that's not really the problem. It's just not very interesting. The story about his wife and his obsession with finding her is an annoying and pointless distraction from the episodes main plot. Maybe a serious version of computer-brain-man could be executed well in the right hands but this isn't it. Chuck was way better at computer-brain-man and Person of Interest is way better at action with a meaningful plot.

For the first few episodes this show seems good. It starts, some weird stuff happens, and then its ends. That's all it is, but it's somehow good. However, after a few episodes the novelty wares off and the fact that nothing actually happens makes it boring. It does have a story but it's too slow paced, instead focusing on random creepy things happening and trying to use the music and tone to make ordinary things seem disturbing.

Arrow: Season 1

User ScoreSwarleyStinson
Oct 8, 2013
The show starts quite soapy with a lot of family drama going on with Green Arrow being referred to by a variety of stupid names like 'that archer guy' and hunting down ordinary criminals one by one in a pretty uninteresting manner. After the first few episodes they stick to 'the hood' as his name and the city side of things develops a main plot and becomes very good. It doesn't drag things out like some shows would when it comes to telling people who he is and he gets a good team together and more comic characters show up. The island side of the story is pretty annoying early on, interrupting the action in the city stories and making you think 'I don't care about this, why are they still showing us the island' but it eventually develops a good plot of its own which ties in with the main city plot and even when there is a whole episode on the island its not unwelcome. It's taking a long time for Dinah to become Canary but given the shows caution with superpowers its understandable. Since Flash is getting an appearance which is apparently a back door pilot in season 2 it probably wont be long before she does find her voice. John Barrowman is great as Merlyn and the finale was awesome.

I was expecting the plot to really get going and get more interesting but it continued to be very soapy and I got bored of waiting for it to all kick off. Maybe if it was on showtime it could be more focused on the actual revenge and better. Ringer was this years other soapy crime show and it was more focused on the crime and overall better. User ScoreSwarleyStinson
Jun 7, 2012
The first few episodes of Awake make very good, smart use of the premise with details from cases in both worlds crossing over, but after that the writers run out of ideas of how to keep it up and the 2 cases have much less of a connection to each other. The procedural parts in both worlds are interesting though and there are also events that threaten to make Michael loose his grip on one world. The ending lets you choose your own answer to what is real but it is still relatively satisfying. Also, just to clear up, this is not Sci-fi, it is just a cop show with a twist, but a much better one than all the CSI clones try to come up with.

Some episodes are pretty good and they are the ones that are actually different. The rest of them stick to a formula, with Nick only being able to see creatures real faces and vice versa whenever it is convenient for the writers. The plot of the entire show would be impossible if the werewolf didn't just happen to decide to be good. Grimms have no powers and there is no supernatural lore about silver bullets or anything so they are just ordinary boring guys shooting the creatures. Overall this show is way too much like an ordinary procedural and they really need to give the story arc a much bigger role. People say this does happen at the end of the season but we shouldn't have to watch an entire season of mediocre episodes first.

I was expecting this to be more of a MOTW format with each week there being a fairy tale character that needs help to get back to the fairy-tale world. Instead it is a continuous story set in the real world. The story is quite good at first, but the problem is that is all just too lightweight, there is no real sense of threat or importance to anything that happens. The fairy-tale characters are trapped in the real world but they are not in any danger, they don't even know they are from another world. They all have jobs, houses, friends; you could even say they have better lives than before since fairy tales are set in medieval times. Also, the evil queen sent them all to the real world as a PUNISHMENT, so why did she choose to COME WITH THEM? Once the story has established itself, the show becomes a lot more like a soap in which the characters just happen to be fairy-tale characters and the plots are boring. The element of fantasy is mostly gone and its more trivial human life drama.

Season 3 was disappointing with a lot of rather bland filler episodes and the story arc wasn't great either. Season 4 however is back on form and is as good (and addictive), if not better than the first 2 seasons. It starts a bit slow but once it gets going (When Peter gets back) the story episodes are great and even the MOTW filler episodes have gone back to being good again, many of them having a link to the story arc woven in as well. Lincoln Lee is now a permanent member of the main team and is a good addition, and the role of Walternates universe (the weaker side of season 3) has been cut down. Fox really were very nice to give Fringe a final season even though it was burning money for them.

This shows main attraction is that being about WITSEC, it is therefore not a procedural. The problem is that some episodes are too much like a procedural, going through the usual motions trying to find out whats going on because the witness isn't telling them everything, and others are just plain boring. The witnesses themselves are just so uninteresting and there is no real sense of threat against them or end goal. Mary's attitude is 'lets babysit this scumbag who I hate but have to protect for my job until they become someone else's problem'. It also shows Mary's family like which is just boring. The show is not funny like many people have said although there are identifiable moments when it attempts to be funny. This shows premise gives it the opportunity to be more action based and serious and have the bad guys actually attacking the witnesses but it blew it.

Its good to see serialized, plot twist based, TV come back when its pretty much dead these days. Yes, the show is quite soapy and in a few episodes the plot twist at the end and the follow up to the previous plot twist at the beginning are the best bits and nothing that good happens in the main part of the episode. As a whole though it does have a very interesting story that makes you want to keep watching. There are a few stupid things like the fact the cops never even consider for a second that it could be the other twin and when they find a fingerprint on something it only comes up with one of them when of course they have the same DNA but there are not enough to be a big deal. Also and there are some awkward moments, as usual for this kind of show, when she gets caught and comes up with a BS reason to explain things but its not a big issue. Overall there are a few small flaws but its still quite moreish and better than a lot of the mediocre shows at the moment cos TV land doesn't want to take any risks and makes everything episodic, procedural and samey.
