It's not all that I was hoping and expecting. Has its moments of disappointment, a bunch of things to criticize and get bothered by, but it also has an appeal that keeps me playing and enjoying myself despite of that.

Merry, cute, charming, colorful, fun, breezy, feel-good thing. The mechanic of swirling the joystick around to create mouth noises is fun to play around with as you dance around through the colorful environments with your dopey bard who stumbles upon various distinct personalities brought to life through nifty writing, splendid hi-tech fontwork and whatnot.

Wattam, with its simple and charming art direction and puzzle/platformer-adjacent gameplay, is kind of similar to Noby Noby Boy, but different, and unlike most things out there. You need to be friends with, or at least in contact with, your inner child to appreciate the childish, weird, cutesy, silly, joyous, humorous, playful, uplifting, mostly sensible nonsensical stream of consciousness game design that Keita Takahashi and friends have produced. Smell the acorn. Eat the nose. Make fruit. Eat the boneloaf. Flush the poop and stack the golden poop to impress the bowling pin. Welcome back table.

Octodad: Dadliest Catch

Occasionally (especially at the end) the unreliable nature of the controls becomes frustrating as the game starts demanding precision and timing. But ultimately it does little to sully the lovable goofball charm of Octodad and his woes.

Clever storytelling, pretty visuals, garrulous charm, appealing sense of style, satisfying gunplay, solid mechanics, snappy pacing, decent length and a very reasonable price. Real positive, fun, surprise this.

****'t. Stay away. I was curious since it was only $0.49 and sometimes these sorts of games can be fun for a laugh. While the writing and voice acting absolutely does live up to that promise, unfortunately the gameplay is not only terrible in a dramatically boring fashion, it's literally so bad it made me feel sick. I've never had problems with motion sickness in any game ever, but this ****'s like that's its true purpose. A torture instrument disguised as a game. The view bobs unnaturally when you move (which also makes aiming near impossible), the perspective is warped, the aspect ratio is stretched and the FOV is real narrow. The perfect storm. If that didn't trigger your barf reflexes you can activate bullettime to make the screen go all blurry and jerky.

You'll probably breeze through this waferthin little expansion in around 90 minutes. I wouldn't say it's a wholly lousy time though as it does manage to incorporate some atmosphere, silliness and cool new animations, but beyond the thematic overlay of odd Japanese cultural aspects it doesn't really expand upon the original game in any noteworthy fashion. Actually, it does the opposite by not considering your original save file. You start NiNP with a small pile of clothes, no vehicles, and less moves. And once it's over, all you've got to show for it in the main campaign is a silly hat. You will unlock access to clothes and vehicles by fighting groups of Jiang Shi and demons. But this was all stuff I had already gained access to on my main save. So that's quite some shameful, pointless filler. Because while the Jiang Shi are fun to look at, they're not too fun to fight. Which between traveling from one place to another, is what you'll be doing a lot of. There are new quirks to fighting these enemies, but if anything they just make the combat feel more strict/repetitive and drawn out. All in all NiNP is a flimsy package that feels rushed out in time for Halloween. Even at the suitably low asking price I don't know if I could recommend this. Hopefully the upcoming Tournament DLC will be a more significant addition.

Battlefield 3: Close Quarters

Since it was essentially free I accept the offering of Close Quarters. But it is so definitely very not representative of the experience which is attracting me to Battlefield games over all the competition. CQ exists to placate the broader audience EA aimed to draw with crappy maps like Operation Metro. Not that these maps are necessarily also crappy, but they're also very restrictive in the type of gameplay you can extract from them. The entire point of Battlefield as far as I'm concerned is the dynamic gameplay created by players having plenty of various tools, weapons, vehicles etc. to choose from, and map designs which accommodate for it. Operation Metro is basically the anti-thesis of Battlefield in that regard. Close Quarters maps aren't literally a tunnel, but they suffer from a similar repressive design conceit. There is only hectic close quarters run n gunning type gameplay. That's the entire point of this themed expansion pack
