Revolutionary Girl Rance Demons Roots is a game, at it's core, that grapples with what it means to live in and navigate a world like Rance as a woman. The choice of playing as demons ties into this - is losing a war enough justification to accept extinction? Should the defeated simply lie down and take whatever humiliation the victorious prescribe to them? while Demons Roots takes great pains to give its female characters interiority, its blind spot in terms of race and unfortunate stereotyping does sour the messaging a fair bit.Despite that however, I find myself drawn to this work, in large part because stories about lesbian love that are also competent genre fictions in their own right are so rare. To put it succinctly, "Much of yuri is peak but it's rare to find peak that is yuri". I picked this game up thinking it was entirely heterosexual, and I was extremely pleasantly surprised to see Polca's arc end with such a satisfying conclusion
