The Fall (2014)2

A point-and-click adventure with some action sequences. Interesting and inventive in theory, frustrating in practice. The story is clearly the strongest element, and while it starts strong, it sort of fizzles out and then ends on an unresolved cliffhanger. The art style is fine and gets the job done, nothing to write home about, but the controls are the real problem here. It is beyond frustrating trying to move, aim, shoot, and solve puzzles in this game. Needs an overhaul to really become playable.

Fun, fast-paced combat! No two runs are the same, with the daunting number of spells available to the player. It's the best sort of chaotic. Sometimes, though, getting combo'd to oblivion by enemies can feel unavoidable, and some bosses are considerably tougher than others. Also, there's like 3 songs in the whole game, so you might go slightly insane from listening to them over and over and over and over.

Excellent when it works. Building a base is fun, exploration with the Seamoth or Cyclops is tense and exciting, and you always feel like you're at the bottom of the food chain, checking your back to make sure you're not in danger. Though the visuals aren't always spectacular, they get the job done, and the voice acting is unexpectedly phenomenal. Conversely, the endless grind of food, water, and materials is tedious, there's many technical bugs (RIP my first seamoth, clipped into the ground), and late-game is a total chore. Still worth it, though you'll have to shrug off some BS from time to time.

The atmosphere is amazing! The setting, rich and beautiful! And then there's the actual gameplay. Are you excited to go back to the base to refill your supplies constantly? What about chugging along at a snail's pace just to get back to the place you were just exploring? How about dying in combat because using your dodge too much makes you take damage? There's potential, but I'm sick of sitting through the grind to reach it.

All of my complaints from the base game still stand, but so do my praises. The new puzzles are a lot of fun, especially the races.

Exceptionally fun mechanics bogged down by a story, setting, and art style that belong in a 2012 flash game. The puzzles are so interesting and creative, it's a shame that the presentation isn't at the same level

While the controls are occasionally awkward, the beautiful settings and deeply personal story keep this game as a favorite. Exploration is fun and deeply rewarding, with lots of fun characters, set pieces, and secrets. Think Breath of the Wild without the combat.

Crazy fun and hectic when it works, but there's some unreliable physics and tedious portions (*cough* boss fights) that drag it down.

A tiny but absurdly polished hectic ride. There's far more in this game than I ever anticipated, and the difficulty, while high, isn't insurmountable. Highly recommended for anyone who enjoys bullet hells.

What can I say about this game that hasn't already been said? The music, the tone, the controls, and the physics engine are all on their own extraordinary and worthy of praise, and yet they all still pale in comparison to the perfection that is the storytelling and structure. This is a game like no other.

The art and music are beautiful, but the game unfortunately sacrifices playability for aesthetics. The movement is satisfying when it works, but often feels sloppy and floaty. When it works, it's excellent, but when it doesn't, it's infuriating. Has a lot of potential, but has too many rough edges to get a higher score.
