SummaryAn absurdist war story for our times, writer-director David Michôd recreates a U.S. General’s roller-coaster rise and fall as part reality, part savage parody – raising the specter of just where the line between them lies today. His is an exploration of a born leader’s ultra-confident march right into the dark heart of folly. At the story’s core ... Read More

War Machine is the first of Australian filmmaker Michod's three films...to have a dominant sense of humor. What unites it with its predecessors is Michod's fierce intelligence and formidable directing skill.

The humor and the indictment of the warrior mentality win out. Michôd’s better instincts take over, many of the crude jokes land with force, and Pitt is hilarious in this mode.

Apparently everyone is extremely angry to see the Netflix network be successful enough to produce its own big budget film with a very talented cast and writing material. You should definitely see the film for yourself and give it a chance, this is not like spectral or the anime Netflix productions that aim towards the most commercial audience. This film aims towards the smart film fanatic demographic, but of course if you hate Brad Pitt because of its fame, or Netflix because is bigger than any other subscription service, then you may not like it.

The movie veers from the broad doomsday satire of the “Dr. Strangelove” variety to a more subtle portrait of institutional failure, and doesn’t always succeed at modulating its tones, but it’s nevertheless a searing critique.

Michôd’s military dramedy is more about press tours, TV interviews and power plays. That’s what makes this Netflix new release redeeming in its political poignancy – but having Brad Pitt doesn’t hurt.

War Machine is unexpectedly flat and disjointed, and it’s hard to know whether to blame this on Michôd (an Australian director best known for his excellent 2010 crime melodrama, Animal Kingdom) or the general bad vibes around the project.

This satire boasts plenty of ideas but is only occasionally compelling.

A fantastically dreary and flatulent anti-war satire.

The film and its script was excellent, it did not only recreated original and interesting behaviours, but it also showed true creativity and talent with its pace and development, and immense depth and realism in the right moments. Excellent. It's hard for me to believe there's people who didn't get the entire tone of the film. Because the film does change its focus, but does it perfectly, with the right turns and takes its time to do it. This bad reviews rain is not justified and its goal is not other than to boycott the Netflix network.

So, this definitely isn't a comedy... If it's truly meant to be then it's one of the most confusing and weird comedies I've ever seen. That's probably why this film misses it's potential, because it doesn't know what it wants to be. There's a couple nice performances but Brad Pitt isn't at his best here. Honestly, he's about an olympic sized swimming pool away from it. A couple of scenes do really pull you in and got me interested but then it was just kinda... over?

Netflix missed the real story. Having Pitt play the McChrystal stand in character McMahon as a doofus as opposed to a tragic figure is a shame. The real life commander went from an innovative leader to someone who didn't follow his own ideas. As a result we could have had a moving story about a fall from grace but got a dumb cariacture instead.

This movie is very slow, weird pacing, and has a weak ending. Brad Pitt's performance is awesome, but he alone can't save this film. The movie drags way too long on the second & third act that I almost fell asleep. When I feel sleepy on a film, that's a very bad sign. Overall, not a movie for everyone & please ignore the trailers for this movie.

This movie is like a balloon filled with style. When it pops, there is no substance left. The director set out to make the case that he knows more about anti-insurgency than some of the best American generals, yet he offers no arguments, no facts from the ground, caricature portraits of every American in the command chain, and a sky-high pile of moral-superiority turd. When you think everyone else is a joke, chances are that the joke is on you.
