Broken Bird is excellent due to its complex characters and tight screenplay. The acting is strong, especially from Clayton, whose genuine emotions ring true. The horror feels real, stemming from an understandable though creepy obsession from a person who is empathetically broken.

With an unerring but sardonic sense of how death presses in on us all, this is a promisingly pungent debut from Mitchell.

As to whether it all resolves into a satisfying horror movie, I wasn’t quite convinced. It is a terrific film on a number of fronts, but despite all the madness and carnage, at the end it really didn’t feel like much dramatic had occurred.
