Great visual design and detailed progression system, but gameplay can quickly become repetitive and tedious.
Abandon Ship is generally enjoyable thanks to its entertaining naval combat system. Narratively ambitious, it does suffer primarily at the hands of some contradictory, tedious or lackluster mechanics - mostly throughout its campaign gameplay.
Abandon Ship can’t escape FTL’s shadow. It’s too similar to avoid being judged based on the high bar its spacefaring cousin set, but it falls far too short of that bar for me to like it. Turns out those water pumps aren’t worth manning after all.

I love this game, amazing mechanics and gameplay. Save system is punishing and fun. A great game to pick up and start playing.

The art and rendering style is gorgeous, where everything is made to look like an old maritime “Age of Sail” oil painting and looks stunning. The visual effects of the rain, water, lighting is just great and the music and audio has had some real love put to them. The game is somewhat a mix of FTL, Sunless Sea and Lovecraftian-isk lore (if you can’t see the influence from those you’re blind) . The combat is great fun where you get to choose your attacking distance, the weapons, who goes where and prioritising attack vs repairing, then boarding the ship. While the exploring the map helps progress the story. The game can be quite punishing at times causing you to lose a member of your crew (of even the ship as well), as you make the wrong decision, freak wave washes them overboard or die to one of the cultist attacking your ship. My biggest mistake was attacking one of the big pirate ships that would gain me a discount at the local port on some upgrades to my ship, and in doing so lost the ship and all my crew

It’s a good pick up and play title that may see you spending a few more hours engaged in seafaring than you realised.

SummaryIn Abandon Ship you take command of a ship and her crew, exploring a diverse, procedurally generated world and engaging enemy vessels in tactical combat. The game focuses on Age of Sail ships in a Fantasy setting, framed in an Art Style inspired by classic Naval Oil Paintings.
